A proposal has been made to close Calaveras Big Trees State Park along with most others across the entire state. I cannot believe that the people that have made or are considering this proposal know what the consequences of such an action might be. Here's a few things to think about and perhaps bring to the attention of representatives in the state legislature:
- Tree poaching is already a problem in the neighborhood... just think what might happen in the park with no one there.
- Many local businesses barely scrape by as it is. Will the loss of tax revenues from all those businesses really be made up for by the reduction in expenses?
- Adding to the unemployment lines in Calaveras County is not what we need right now.
- It's my understanding that BTSP is actually profitable and contributes revenue to the state. What kind of idiot would propose solving a financial problem by cutting income?
- The commercial and private property values will likely be negatively impacted, hurting owners as well as real estate businesses.
- Reduction in property values will further reduce sorely needed property tax revenue for Calaveras County, already in a financial crises of their own.
- The park provides a wealth of education and experience about nature to hundreds of thousands of kids.
